The family of a 32-year-old Texas gas station clerk are in mourning after he was shot dead by a robber over lottery tickets - hours after the robber allegedly killed another clerk.

Father-of-one Gopi Krishna Dasari was killed in the early hours of Saturday morning when an armed robber stormed into his gas station and shot him, less than a year after he moved to the US to pursue the American Dream.

Davonta Mathis, 21, from Waco, has been charged with his murder and an the addition murder of a second gas station clerk, Muhammad Hussain, 60, the day before.

Mathis told officers that he had gone to the stores to steal lottery tickets in the hope that he would win and be able to buy an apartment, according to WFAA.

Dasari's body has been flown back to India where his family are in mourning, one relative told WFAA: 'His wife still thinks he's alive and that he's going to come back to her.'

Dasari had moved to the US from India less than a year ago to work and provide for his wife and young daughter.

His father has bone marrow cancer and had sold off an acre of his farmland to pay for Dasari to relocate to the US.

He was working as a gas station clerk and had 'a heart full of dreams and aspirations.'

But on Saturday, Mathis burst into his store at 12.45am and confronted him.

Video footage from the store shows a man dressed in all dark clothing bursting in with a gun and shooting Dasari without hesitation as he backs away with his hands up.

He was rushed to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Dasari was the second clerk Mathis allegedly shot dead in less than 24 hours, after 60-year-old Hussain was killed in a separate attack nearby the day before.

Investigators told WFAA that in both cases Mathis walked away with just a few lottery tickets or cigarettes.

Dasari succumbed to his injuries after 18 hours in the hospital. His body has now been flown back to India where his family are in mourning

He reportedly told officers after his arrest that he did not regret anything he had done, and that he had gone to the stores to steal lottery tickets in the hope he would win and would be able to buy an apartment.

Mathis allegedly added that he wasn't a racist but blamed the clerks for not cooperating with him, saying a white person would have.

But Dasari's relatives say he would have cooperated if he was given a chance.

His cousin, Praveen, who did not want to give a full name, told WFAA: 'If he would have asked for something, he would have given him whatever he wanted.

'He would have told him to take whatever--I don't know what that guy was thinking, taking a life without realizing the impact it would have on his whole family.

'He was here to lead a good life for his family and kids and didn't want to fail them.'

Mathis reportedly tried to kill himself after shooting Dasari, but couldn't find his weapon while he was being pursued by police.

After Dasari was shot a relative started a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses when he was in hospital.

They wrote: 'Gopi is a caring, hardworking individual who has always been there for his loved ones.

'He has a heart full of dreams and aspirations, and it breaks our hearts to see him suffer.'

After he died from his injuries later that day, they shared another update, saying: 'Gopi lost his life after fighting for 18 hours in ICU and we are preparing to send his body to India as early as possible.

'Gopi's passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of his family and friends.'
