Live from the Munich Football Arena

Our man in Munich this afternoon is Andy Dillon, and he's been in touch to set the scene.

"It's virtually impossible to work out how many Ukraine fans have managed to make it to Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena for a momentous game for theircountry.

"With both teams traditionallywearing yellow, a large proportion of the 75,000 capacity stadium looks identical.

"Think of it as the biggest crowd in Watford's history.

"The main talking point is the fact that war-torn Ukraine can actually put a team out - let alone into a major tournament given they have been under siege from Russia for more than two years.

"Hours beforekick-off, legendary Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko was in towndisplaying a section of shattered seating from the ruined stadium in Kharkiv, which was built for when his homeland jointly-hosted the Euros along with Poland 12 years ago.

"There is no doubt who are the people's champions at this year's tournament, win, lose, or draw."

    Romania 0-0 Ukraine

    15. It's been a very entertaining and open first quarter of an hour in Munich despite few attempts at goal.

Perhaps my standards and expectations are just really low after the England game last night.

    13. Great defending from Zinchenko.

I don't think I've ever written those words in that order before.

    Romania 0-0 Ukraine

    11. An excellent turn on the edge of the box from Dovbyk presents a shooting opportunity for the Ukraine striker.

However, before he can get an effort away, Bancu gets a toe on the ball for a very important touch.

    9. A first shot on target of the game is thumped into the midriff of Lunin by the right foot of by Coman.

Meanwhile, Zabarnyi is down after being caught high up on the knee by a very forceful follow through from Razvan Marin.

    Romania 0-0 Ukraine

    7. Commentators are desperate to remind us at every turn that Romania midfielders Razvan and Marius Marin are not related.

Razvan reminds us exactly who he is with an unsubtle elbow into the back of the lively Sudakov.

    3. Dovbyk tries to bring down a long ball out of the sky, but his touch ahead of Dragusin is loose and runs through to Nita in the Romania goal.

A little more composure and the Girona striker would have been in.

    Kick-off - Romania v Ukraine

    1. Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg sounds his whistle, and Ukraine - all in blue - get this Group E encounter underway.

Both sides are it from the off, and there are only 45 seconds on the clock when Mykhailo Mudryk sets off on his first mazy run through the Romania defence.

    Here come the two teams!

It's a glorious day in Munich, and the setting inside the stadium is a sea of yellow all around.

As the two teams emerge from the tunnel and line up for the national anthems, the players, staff and fans of Ukraine are all smiles, a defiant show of hope after all that has happened to their country in the past few years.

The Romania anthem is belted out with a little more ferocity, but national pride is just as evident.

This is a huge afternoon for both countries, and kick-off comes next.

Serhiy hopes to follow Shevchenko's lead

Ukraine head coach Serhiy Rebrov is managing at his first major international tournament after taking over from Oleksandr Petrakov last year.

And like his old strike partner Andriy Shevchenko at Euro 2020, Rebrov will be hoping to lead his country out of the group stage.

As a player, the former Tottenham forward didn’t appear at a European Championship but did play four games at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, scoring in a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia.

    Former internationals have their say

In the build-up to this intriguing Group E clash, two former representatives of their national sides have been giving their views to Online Betting Guide.

And former Ukraine midfielder Yevhen Levchenko is feeling confident, believing his country can get off the mark with a win.

"I know Romania have a young team but we don’t know much about them because they failed to qualify in 2020," he told OLBG.

"If the Ukraine squad are all ready, I think it will be a 2-1 victory. I think we have more experience but who knows what might happen."

The former Sunderland and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, who won 27 caps for Romania was less certain of success.

"I hope it will be a win but I’ve seen Ukraine and they are quite strong.

"I think we will draw two games and win one, so I’ll go for 2-2."

    Romania summon spirit of 2000

This summer will mark the sixth European Championship in which Romania have taken part.

However, among their 16 matches at the finals, the Tricolorii have won just a single one (D5 L10).

Mind you, that victory was one to remember.

Back in 2000, Romania fought back from 2-1 down in Charleroi to beat Kevin Keegan's England 3-2 and dump out the Three Lions. Ioan Ganea scored the winner in the 89th minute from the penalty spot.

    Ukraine odds-on for success

Under the guidance of Andriy Shevchenko, Ukraine reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 before being eliminated by England - and the bookmakers believe that they get off to another winning start with former Tottenham striker Serhiy Rebrov at the helm.

    • Romania win 17/5
    • Draw 23/10
    • Ukraine win 10/11

Odds from William Hill correct at time of post publication.

Countries ready for first competitive showdown

This afternoon's encounter in Munich will be first ever competitive meeting between Romania and Ukraine.

Each of the previous six contests between the countries have come in international friendlies with the Tricolours of Romania claiming victory in the first three between 2001 and 2003.

However, Ukraine are unbeaten in the three since, winning two and drawing one of the matches between 2010 and 2016.

    Good afternoon from Munich

Welcome to day four of Euro 2024 and live coverage of the Group E clash between Romania and Ukraine.

After the insipidness of England last night, it's the turn of Eastern Europe to take centre stage on Monday afternoon.

And with an ageing Belgium and Slovakia also awaiting them in the group, today's fixture represents a real chance for either the yellow and blue of Ukraine or the yellow and blue (and red) of Romania to take a huge stride towards the knockouts.

It's all set for a 2pm start at the Munich Football Arena, and we'll have news of the two line-ups shortly.
